Indian Icon- BIG 'B'

This Brand ambassador of India is a household name in South Asia. Having touched the heart and souls of millions of fans he has endeared himself to them like no Bollywood actor has ever done.
Early Life: The actor was born in the historical town of Allahabad on the 11th day of October in 1942. Father Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a renowned poet, had a strong influence on his upbringing. His mother Teji Bachchan a great home maker and a lover of the stage gave him the qualities to make a career in acting. Amitabh made a humble beginning. After schooling in a convent and graduating from Delhi University he took up a job in Calcutta. He would have been a freight booking clerk all his life had he not decided to move to Mumbai for an acting career.
The actor debuted in 1969 in Saat Hindustani which crashed at the box office but gave him the National Award for the Best Newcomer. . Due to his great personality and talented acting Amitabh got the opportunity to act in movies along with well known older actors and actresses to the new generation actors. To consider few examples, in 1971 he played the role as an actor opposite to great actress Mala Sinha in the movie 'Sanjog'. Than he acted in the 1983 movie 'Pukar' along with well known old generation actor Randhir Kapoor and actress Zeenat Aman. Actress Rekha can be seen maximum number of times opposite to him in his movies and Kader Khan as villian. He churned out at least one major hit every year, including Deewaar (1975), Sholay (1975) Trishul (1978), Muqaddar Ka Sikander (1978), Don (1978), Kasme Vaade (1978), Kaala Patthar (1979), Mr. Natwarlal (1979), Ram Balram (1980), Shaan (1980), Lawaaris (1981), and Shakti (1982). Raakhee is one of the leading actress in earlier Amitabh Bachchan's movies. In the movie "Anand" he played the role of a Doctor(patient was actor Rajesh Khanna) to win the Filmfare Award of Best Supporting Actor. But superstardom was still distant. Then came a string of non starters till Bombay to Goa, an all time comedy of Bollywood. The road had just begun for the actor.
In 1979 film 'Kaala Patthar' Amitabh acted opposite to well known actress Neetu Singh who is currently the wife of actor Rishi Kapoor .Other actors in the movie were Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha and Parveen Babi. This was the time when "revenge" was a theme which was very popular in Bollywood. This led to the "angry young man" which Amitabh was ideally suited to play. His imposing height and splendid dialogue delivery helped him build this image.

Then arrived the golden era of seventies. In Zanjeer he played a dashing police inspector who fights for justice. Deewar, the tale of two brothers, showed Amitabh as a victim of circumstances and was a super duper hit. This catapulted the actor to the prime of his career in Bollywood. Sholay, a phenomenal movie, hit Bollywood like a hurricane. Amitabh immortalized the eternal friend Jai on the silver screen. By now every youth in the country was buzzing dialogues from the movie and every girl fantasized about Amitabh Bachchan. His roles in Muqaddar Ka Sikander and Don made him the undisputed king of Bollywood. The actor showed his versatility by playing a comic role in Chupke Chupke, a great family comedy which is still loved by Bollywood fans. His career peaked with Amar Akbar Anthony sweeping awards en route. 1998 saw Govinda combining with Amitabh Bachchan to produce Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan with David Dhawan. Amitabh first time played the role of an Afghan or pathan in "Khuda Gawah" with leading indian actress Sridevi .

In the meanwhile the actor had married his co star Jaya Bhaduri and settled in personal life. Fame brought rumors. Ironically his suspected romance with Rekha was enacted in Reel Life in Silsila which was again a super hit. All rich and successful men are hated. The eighties brought trouble to this great actor. In 1982 he was severely injured on the sets of the movie Coolie but he recovered miraculously. His decision of foraying into politics and film production by forming a company known as ABCL proved to be critical. After being elected from Allahabad he had to resign within three years. His name was also dragged in the Bofors Controversy. His relations with the Media and the press soured. After his tryst with politics the actor made a comeback in 1988 in Shahenshah, the story of which was written by her wife Jaya Bachchan. All his films did not succeed and it appeared that it was the beginning of the end of a great career. His foray into film making and event management brought huge losses driving him very close to bankruptcy. But many of his later films did well in box office. He did the role of a stern headmaster in the movie 'Mohabbatein' co-starring with Shahrukh Khan, Jugal Hansraj and talented actor Uday Chopra. The film was directed by Uday Chopra's brother and Yash Chopra's son Aditya Chopra.
The new millennium brought new hope. The TV show " Kaun Banega Karodpati" which was anchored by the actor became a huge success and brought the magic of the actor back to audiences. Amitabh once again endeared himself to men and women, old and young alike. This show is said to have bailed out the actor from his financial worries. By now the actor had turned sixty and had to play roles suiting his age and looks. He started playing the father figure in Bollywood films. His role of a father in Baghban became a role model for all the fathers. And in Cheeni Kum he falls in love with a girl whose father is younger than him.
Besides acting, his rich voice can be heard in many documentaries and introduction to dozens of movies. He has also had his share of playback singing. The stature of the actor is so high that his son, Abhishek Bachchan, a rising star, is struggling to emerge from the shadows of his father. In a most significant development for Bollywood Abhishek married Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai to make the Bachchan family even more powerful.

He has graciously acted in commercials promoting social awareness also. The actor has been immortalized in the Madame Tussauds Museum. Having ruled Bollywood for quarter of a century the "Big B" story is still blooming. But still there is one actor who can compete him in the bollywood and he is non other than Hrithik Roshan .I consider Hrithik as a better dancer than Amitabh Bachchan but Amitabh still is better for his tall body, great personality and powerful acting. He is the tallest actor in bollywood and after him is John Abraham who is another body builder and male model of India. All my family members call Amitabh as "Lambu" which means very tall. My mother says he is the most disciplined and sensible actor in the bollywood and she liked him in "Kaun Banega Crorepati" program.

Akshay is King- King of Blockbuster Hits!

Once famous as khiladi, Akshay Kumar has now reached a position in Bollywood that his movies are a sure hit. In fact, his presence turns even a non-hit into a hit one. Though his 'Tashan' flopped, the rustic desi boy hit the box office with 'Namastey London' and 'Welcome'. Now, Akki returns as Happy Singh, a gullible, foolhardy and accident-prone guy in romantic comedy 'Singh Is Kinng' that was released on Friday. This 'Punjabi Munda' looks all set to turn the real king of box office with his much hyped movie directed by Anees Bazmee. This is his one more Katrina Kaif starrer that is definitely going to be blockbuster hit. It couldn't be otherwise as the hit pair of Akshay and Katrina has already built huge expectation from it.

A Look At The Dry Spell Of 2008 with flops upon flops this year....

2008 has been a year filled with many ups and downs for Bollywood! Starting with a super hit like Jodha Akbar gave the year a jump start but unfortunately many duds like Sunday, One Two Three and Tashan followed! The recent Jaane Tu Yaan Jaane Na has been a huge blockbuster hit while Kismat Konnection may have received average reviews but the film has performed decently well in many areas.* Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu and Akshay Khanna starrer Race in the beginning of the year provided a breather in between the flops while U Me Aur Hum and Jannat were also average fares. In comparison last year had seen back to back hits like Namastey London, Cheeni Kum, Partner, Guru, Chak De India, The Namesake and later on films like Bhool Bhuliya, Jab We Met, Om Shanti Om, Welcome and Taare Zameen Par. Unfortunately this year just does not live up as the list of hits is small while the list of flops just does not seem to end! Even big star cast movies like Bhoothnath and Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic have disappointed audiences. So what are the reasons for the flop movies? Well starting with the recent Love Story 2050 – a new star who supposedly resembles Hrithik Roshan has tried but failed to copy the superstar who has given huge hits like Jodha Akbar, Dhoom 2 and Koi Mil Gaya. And then imagination is one thing but in 32 years we will have time machines, talking and working bears, robots, id chips etc – wowwww, isn’t that stretching one’s imagination a bit too much? Lets not talk about 2:35 hr torture anymore which had a bad script and the lead actor Harman definitely needs some polishing. Moving on to the comedies of the year, “Krazzy 4” and “Sunday” had no good humor and were not all funny. “Halla Bol”, “Superstar”, “Bombay to Bangkok” had bad music and scripts while “One Two Three” – was another pathetic film and Paresh Rawal selling undergarments.. no comments!!!! The biggest flop of the year was hands down “Tashan” followed by Jimmy, the debut of Mithun Charkraborty’s son Mimoh tied with films like “Haal-E-Dil”, “Dhoom Dhadaka”, “Mr. White Mr. Black" and the recent “Money Hai Toh Honey Hai” and “Mission Istanbul”. You can’t stop yourself from thinking, what has happened to Bollywood? Horrible scripts, below expectation story lines and at times poor acting has led to so many duds this year!

After the increase in inflation of about 11.49% who would like to buy a ticket worth Rs 100 to 300, to watch only flops like Tashan, Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic, Bhoothnath, Jimmy and Khusbhoo?

Akshay Kumar takes a swipe at Shahrukh Khan?

By hailing Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan as the real 'King', it seems like Akshay Kumar has taken a swipe at superstar Shahrukh Khan .Many in trade circles had commented that the title of his forthcoming film Singh is Kinng was an attempt on Akshay's part to show that he was the 'King of Bollywood'.

But steering clear of speculations that the movie title 'Singh is Kinng' was an assertion of his box office status, Akshay, whose recent films have raked in nearly Rs 500 crore worldwide, said the Big B is the real 'King'."Bachchan has been in the film industry for over 35 years and he is the real king. There are many who are around for 15-20 years and like to call themselves king. There is only one king and he is Amitabh Bachchan. I am merely acting in a film called Singh is Kinng," Akshay said, without naming SRK, who is called 'King Khan'.He was speaking at a promotional event of 'Singh is Kinng’, which will be released tomorrow. To a question on whether his comments would fuel another round of speculations, Akshay said, "I said what I feel. Even after 35 to 40 years in the industry, Amitabh Bachchan is a humble man. He folds his hands when he speaks. I have worked with him in seven films. If my comments lead to a controversy, I don’t care."Akshay, who is shooting in Los Angeles for Sajid Nadiadwala 's Kambakht Ishq , specially came to Mumbai for three days to promote 'Singh is Kinng'. He also participated in the inaugural show of Bachchan's world tour 'Unforgettable' in Toronto on July 18.When asked whom he was referring to in a recent statement daring his detractors to come out in the open, Akshay said he had not named any one and would not like to do so. "The message has been conveyed to the person who needed to know," he added.Akshay said since he was a Punjabi, Sikhs were closer to him and he was aware of their tradition and culture."The film tries to convey the message that everybody who has a positive attitude irrespective of money and power can become a king," he said. When asked whether he was open to appearing on Salman Khan 's 'Dus Ka Dum' television show with co-star Katrina Kaif to promote his film, Akshay asked, "Why not. What is wrong in doing it to promote the film”?On whether he would work with his ex-girlfriend Shilpa Shetty in her home production, Akshay asked, "Why shouldn't I work with her. We have given so many hits.

"Responding to a question on whether he was responsible for co-star Katrina's success in a short span because their on-screen pairing had worked wonders, Akshay said, "You can also say that she is instrumental for my success. Nobody plays a role in furthering an individual's career. It is the film which does well and a film's success is due to collective team effort."
